With the 25th anniversary of the Sian Ka´an Biosphere Reserve in mind, Hacienda Tres Ríos Resort, Spa & Nature Park invited a group of journalists to participate in the launch of the Permanent Beach Clean-up Program of this UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The large group of journalists from Cancún and Playa del Carmen and their friends and family undertook the noble job of cleaning the beachfront of the Sian Ka´an Biosphere Reserve where they collected a large variety of plastic and other trash left by visitors or washed ashore by ocean tides. Containers were found from over 45 countries, some as far away as Russian and Finland.

In addition to the participation of the journalists and their families and friends, the organization Friends of Sian Ka’an reported that an additional 115 civilian volunteers from private businesses and government agencies collected 1,135 kilos of trash, primarily plastic, glass and metal and deposited them at 8 different drop points along the 16 kilometers of beach between the Arco Maya and past the bridge of Boca Paila.

Following the beach clean-up a press conference was held. In attendance were Gonzalo Merediz Alonso, Executive Director of Friends of Sian Ka’an; Cameron Boyd, from the Ecological Center Sian Ka’an;  Omar Ortíz Moreno, Director of the Sian Ka´an Biosphere Reserve (CONAP);  Porfirio San Germán Guerra, Director of ZOFEMAT of Tulum y Enrique Rojas Alcocer, Director of Ecology, Tulum City Hall.

The journalists, along with their children and guests, enjoyed the beach for the rest of the day satisfied to have participated in this important ecological work for the benefit of our treasured beaches.
