Steve, aka "Web Guy", and I have been Playa del Carmen locals for nearly 5 years. Moving from the soggy city of Seattle, in December 2002, we quickly adapted to Playa life, and we then took on the daunting task of figuring out what to do to stay in the beautiful Riviera Maya. I was a teacher for the first year and a half, teaching both local and foreign children ,in a small program that I helped to develop. Unfortunately, due to a lack of funding, the program came to an end. This is when I became involved in Playa Maya News. During the time that I was teaching Steve was developing a web design and computer consulting company called Virtual Playa . This is when the concept of Playa Maya News was born. Steve and a friend decided that there was an unfilled niche for a local paper specifically catering to the foreign population who spoke English. They first developed the website, and Playa Maya News went live in April of 2003. Being the industrious duo that they were, they then decided to add a print edition to the mix. The first print edition came to life in June 2003. The idea was to pull content from online and put out a print edition every other month. A sales team was hired, and things were going great until an illustrious day in February 2004. We didn’t see eye to eye with our sales manager, and he was asked to leave the company. It was at this point that things got dodgy! He was not a happy camper ,and he made false allegations about us making for quite a challenging year. So unfortunately, the print edition fell by the way side as we spent the year struggling to set things right. Fast forward to Spring of 2006; after a year and a half of dealing with the fallout we were finally okayed to work for Playa Maya News again! So we redesigned On the new site we are constantly adding new features and ideas, and after many many requests we have added in visitors information such as tours, hotel bookings, airport transfers, reviews, and the list goes on.... We want to hear from you! We love the area so much that we want to share our experiences with you all. So, if you have any questions, ideas, thoughts, innovations, concerns, complaints….you get the idea….let us know! Thank you for supporting Playa Maya News! Take care, and see you on the beach.
