Due to amazing work and relief efforts Playa del Carmen is doing incredibly well.
International news sources have been reporting that Playa del Carmen is "destroyed" from Hurricane Wilma, but this is certainly not the case…
Although outlying areas have suffered more damage then the urban infrastructure, Playa del Carmen is open for business. Local papers have said that electricity will be fully restored in the next couple of days, and full services (cable, phone, internet etc) will only take another week or two to be restored as well. The freeway, both North and South, is open and clear with traffic flowing without incident. The beach is beautiful and better then before Wilma came to visit our laid back beach town.
We have gotten limited information from Cozumel thus far, but the ferry is running, free of charge, and they are slowly but surely getting debris cleared, and planning for the future. Cancun has reported severe damage to some hotels, but it is clear that there are also many that survived without major damage. Please stay tuned to Playa Maya News for current updates and photos, and we will do our best in providing as much detailed information as we can.
