Mother's Day in Playa del Carmen

Mother's Day in Mexico is celebrated on May 10th so don't forget that special woman in your life!

Although my mother passed away many years ago I always think of her during this special holiday. I will buy a bouquet of flowers in her honor and smile in her memory. But to me Mother’s Day does not only reflect a special day for the mothers of the world, but it has come to be a celebration world wide honoring women. In early celebrations mothers were honored specifically, but now Mother’s Day is observed across a wide range of relationships. In addition to mothers, grandmothers and wives, the celebration now extends to daughters, sisters, aunts, mothers of loved ones, friends and any other women who play a mother-like role breaking old traditions and creating new one’s.

The earliest Mother's Day celebrations can be traced back to spring celebrations that were held in ancient Greece to honor Rhea, the Mother of the Gods and goddesses. In Rome the most significant Mother's Day-like festival was dedicated to the worship of Cybele, another mother goddess. Ceremonies in her honor began some 250 years before Christ was born. This Roman religious celebration, known as Hilaria, lasted for three days;from March 15 to 18! Some say the ceremonies in honor of Cybele were adopted by the early church to venerate the Mother of Christ, Mary. Others believe the Mother Church was substituted for mother goddess and customs began to dictate that a person visit the church of his/her baptism on this day. People attended the mother church of their parish, laden with offerings.

In Mexico, Mother's Day is celebrated on a fixed day, May 10, as opposed to Mother's Day in United States that falls on the second Sunday in the month of May. Mother's Day in Mexico is celebrated in a colorful fashion. Children honor their mothers and thank their mothers for caring for them. A traditional custom in Mexico, is that sons and daughters come home to their mother’s house (if they are already grown) on the eve of Mother's Day on May 9. Then on the 10th of May the day is celebrated with gusto as churches in Mexico organize special Mother’s Day masses. The highpoint of the event is the orchestra which plays "Las Mañanitas" and distribution of 'tamales' and 'atole', the traditional early-morning meal to all local mothers.

On Mother's Day people in Mexico give gifts, flowers and cards to their mothers similar to other parts of the world. While the older children usually buy gifts ,the younger ones prepare handmade gifts to honor their mothers. In most of our local area schools, here in Playa del Carmen, Mother’s Day functions and festivities are organized where children present skits and songs to express their gratitude for their mothers and to celebrate this special day. So whether your mother has passed on, whether she lives far away, or if you are lucky enough to spend the day with her remember to honor this celebration to women and mothers across the globe.
